Parliament House staff suffer bullying

AUSTRALIA’S Parliament House has a “toxic” culture in which staff are regularly bullied and cronyism is common, an inquiry has heard.

Union delegates told a Senate committee hearing in Canberra today one in five Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) staff had experienced bullying.

“It’s definitely increased in the past 24 months,” Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) workplace harassment officer Leo Vukosa said.

But senior management turned a blind eye to the problem and staff who had confided in him rarely wanted to take their complaints further, he said.

“It’s common knowledge around DPS, that if people speak out because they feel that they are being dealt with inappropriately, that their career paths are more of a less stalled,” Mr Vukosa told the committee.
